Jewellery Care

Our pieces are made from 925 sterling silver and stainless steel. Sterling silver is a special metal which require special care and stainless steel is durable and resists corrosion and oxidation. To ensure it’s longevity, here are some tips to properly maintaining your favourite pieces.

STERLING SILVER
Sterling silver jewellery is an excellent and high quality choice to have in your collection. The metal will not rust easily if you look after it. 925 silver is a precious metal and it is generally too soft which is why it's great for delicate pieces. Fine silver is alloyed with copper to create sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper. Sometimes sterling silver is referred to as '925 silver' and you will see this stamp in some of your pieces. Here's our special care tips for sterling silver.

  • Avoid cosmetics. Keep away from fragrances like perfume, make-up and sprays.
  • Remove jewellery. Always remove your silver pieces before bed time to avoid hitting and scraping. Make sure your chains are secured to keep it from tangling.
  • Clean with a soft cloth. Clean your silver gently and always use a cleaner designed for silver use.
  • Avoid getting your jewellery wet. Water will not damage your jewellery if it’s sterling silver but overtime silver will oxidise and cause your silver to change colour. Don’t wear sterling silver in chlorinated water.
  • Store in a cool pace, dry place. If silver jewellery is not worn for a long time, you can store it in a jewellery box wrapped in a soft piece of cloth. Avoid direct sunlight and store in a dark place.
  • Tarnishing. If your jewellery has tarnished over time simply use a special silver cleaner and use with a soft cloth. This is all you need for a new shiny jewellery.
  • Allergic reaction. If irritation occurs, apply a thin coat of clear nail polish over your jewellery. Apply again if it wears off over time.

STAINLESS STEEL
Stainless steel materials are hypoallergenic and is safe for sensitive skin. Unlike other materials it won't turn your skin green or other colour, it is durable and does not fade. Follow the instructions below for basic jewellery care.

  • Use mild dish soap and warm water. Dish soap is a great way to combat grease, which is the most frequent kind of grime to appear on your stainless steel jewellery. Gently soak your pieces and rub with a soft cloth. You can use a toothbrush or any soft brittle brush to reach the hard places.
  • Maintaining and storing. Although stainless steel jewellery doesn’t tarnish or corrode and doesn’t require special care, it can scratch. Store your pieces separately from other jewellery made of different materials. Keep your Mati pieces individually in one of our pouches.
